A Blockbuster Opening for Vijay's Farewell Film

Jana Nayagan, the last film of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay before he committed to full-time politics, opened in theatres worldwide on Thursday, July 23, 2026, to packed houses and long queues of fans, particularly across Tamil Nadu. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film had collected close to Rs 24.67 crore net in India by Thursday evening, with the gross figure touching around Rs 29.11 crore. With late-night show collections still being counted, trade watchers expect the final Day 1 India tally to cross the Rs 30 crore mark.

Tamil Nadu Leads, Other Markets Lag

The film ran in over 10,200 shows across the country on its opening day, recording an overall occupancy of close to 40 percent. Tamil Nadu accounted for the bulk of the collections, contributing roughly Rs 10.70 crore of the early India net figure, while the Telugu and Hindi dubbed versions added smaller amounts of around Rs 45 lakh and Rs 22 lakh respectively in early estimates. The response outside Tamil Nadu has been comparatively muted, with the film's overall performance likely to hinge on how well it travels beyond its home market in the coming days.

Worldwide Numbers and Advance Booking Momentum

Jana Nayagan had already built strong momentum ahead of release, with advance bookings crossing Rs 6.7 crore within hours of opening and pre-release advance gross collections touching around Rs 15 crore. Trade analysts now peg the worldwide Day 1 collection in the range of Rs 80 crore to Rs 100 crore, a number expected to fall short of the opening-day benchmarks set by Vijay's two most recent releases.

How It Compares to Vijay's Previous Openings

Vijay's 2023 release Leo recorded a worldwide Day 1 gross of around Rs 148.5 crore, while his 2024 film The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) opened to approximately Rs 126-127 crore worldwide. Jana Nayagan's projected opening therefore places it behind both of those films, though trade watchers note that a large fan base and the emotional weight of it being Vijay's last cinematic outing could help it sustain strong numbers through the opening weekend.

A Film That Overcame Its Share of Hurdles

The release came after a turbulent run-up: Jana Nayagan faced roughly a seven-month delay linked to certification issues, endured an online HD leak ahead of its release, and ultimately received an 'A' certificate from the censor board. Despite these setbacks, the film secured a massive worldwide release across thousands of screens on its eventual release date.

About the Film

Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The story follows a former officer who becomes the foster father of a young girl and helps her pursue her late parents' dream of becoming an officer, before their lives are upended by a larger conflict.

What Lies Ahead

With Vijay having stepped away from acting to focus on his role as Chief Minister and leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Jana Nayagan carries significance well beyond a typical box office contest. Industry trackers say word of mouth, repeat viewership and support from family audiences over the coming days will determine whether the film can close in on, or exceed, the lifetime hauls of Vijay's earlier hits Leo and GOAT, both of which crossed the Rs 450-600 crore mark worldwide.
