Heavy Monsoon Rains Disrupt Life Across Mumbai and Maharashtra

Relentless downpour has once again brought Mumbai to a grinding halt. Authorities have announced a complete shutdown of schools and colleges across the city today as the India Meteorological Department maintains its orange alert for heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The decision comes after days of intense monsoon activity that submerged roads, triggered landslides and caused widespread inconvenience to residents.

Official Safety Measures in Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation issued a late-night advisory declaring a holiday for all government, private and civic-run educational institutions. Officials emphasised this precautionary step aims to keep students safe amid forecasts of continued heavy showers throughout the day.

Citizens have been urged to step out only when absolutely necessary. The civic body also activated its 24x7 helpline 1916 for any emergency assistance.

Ground Situation in Palghar and Nearby Areas

Palghar district bore the brunt of Monday’s deluge. One fatality was reported while hundreds of families were shifted to safer locations. Vasai taluka recorded the highest rainfall at over 200 mm, with several other areas crossing 150 mm in a single day. Local administration moved more than 700 people from low-lying and flood-prone zones near dams and rivers.

Infrastructure damage has also been reported in multiple villages, adding to the challenges for rescue teams working round the clock.

Landslides Disrupt Mumbai-Pune Connectivity

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s Missing Link section witnessed a major landslide near Tunnel 2, forcing authorities to close the Mumbai-bound carriageway for nearly 18 hours. Traffic resumed late Monday night only after thorough safety inspections.

On the railway front, the Karjat-Lonavala ghat section suffered multiple landslides after receiving an astonishing 600 mm of rain in 24 hours. Central Railway teams are working despite difficult conditions to restore services on this crucial route.

Why This Monsoon Season Feels More Challenging

Experts point to the active monsoon trough and formation of low-pressure systems over the Arabian Sea as reasons behind the intense spells. Several regions in Maharashtra, including Mumbai suburbs and western ghats, have recorded excess rainfall this season.

While the rains are vital for agriculture and water reservoirs, the urban flooding and infrastructure strain highlight the need for better preparedness in low-lying areas.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents are advised to stay updated through official channels and avoid waterlogged areas.
