BCCI Confirms Review After Second Straight T20I Series Loss

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will conduct a detailed performance review of the men's T20I team immediately after the ongoing tour of England concludes, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said. Speaking to IANS from Edinburgh, where the ICC Annual Conference is currently underway, Saikia acknowledged that the team is going through a difficult phase.

"The Indian T20I team is going through a bad phase in their games against England and Ireland before. So, we have to do a review once this series is over," Saikia said, adding that the board would look into the problems the team is facing and try to address them in a detailed review once the ongoing series concludes. According to Saikia, the review will take place immediately after India's ODI series in England ends on July 19.

India's Series Defeat Confirmed in Bristol

India's T20I series defeat to England was sealed after a nine-wicket loss in the fourth match in Bristol, handing England an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, with the opening match having ended in a no-result. Batting first, India were restricted to 158 for 7, with captain Shreyas Iyer top-scoring with an unbeaten 80 off 49 balls, receiving little support from the rest of the batting order. England chased the target down comfortably in 13.5 overs, powered by half-centuries from captain Harry Brook (79 off 35) and Phil Salt (59 off 42), while bowlers Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue picked up two wickets each.

India also lost the second T20I by four wickets and suffered a heavy 125-run defeat in the third match, where the side was bowled out for just 76 while chasing 202, their second-lowest total in men's T20I history and their heaviest defeat by margin of runs in the format.

Second Consecutive Series Loss as Defending Champions

This marks India's second consecutive T20I series defeat as the reigning T20 World Cup champions, following a 2-0 loss to Ireland just before the England leg of the tour, which was also India's first-ever series defeat to Ireland. Notably, both series losses have come since the BCCI replaced Suryakumar Yadav, who captained India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, with Shreyas Iyer as T20I captain.

Gambhir's Position Comes Under Scrutiny

According to a BCCI source, the upcoming review will assess the performances of both players and the coaching staff. Head coach Gautam Gambhir's position has reportedly come under scrutiny following the team's recent results, even though his contract runs until 2027.

Gambhir has defended the team's approach, describing the current phase as a deliberate rebuilding process. "When you go for that reset, it takes a bit of time. If you see, a 15-year-old is opening, Prince Yadav is in his second T20I, Harshit Rana is coming back from an injury," Gambhir said, referring to teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He added that while results matter in international cricket, the team needed to be given time to develop against a high-quality opponent like England.

India will look to salvage some pride in the fifth and final T20I, though the series has already been lost. Attention will then shift to the ongoing ODI series in England, after which the BCCI's review of the T20I setup, covering team selection, captaincy transition, and coaching strategy, is expected to begin in earnest.
