Pune: Widespread civic demonstrations swept Pune on Friday as thousands of citizens, progressive youth groups, and opposition leaders rallied against what they termed an escalating clampdown on civil liberties and public dissent. The public outrage follows two back-to-back flashpoints: the 1:00 AM midnight arrest of civic activist and YouTuber Santosh Pandit from his residence, and a brazen physical assault on social commentator Vidyanand Bapat, who has been vocal against the commercial exploitation and deafening noise pollution during public Ganesh festival celebrations. Demonstrators assembled under a unified civic banner, questioning whether holding authorities accountable has become a punishable offense in Maharashtra's cultural capital.

Why Citizens Are Rallying: What Did Pandit and Bapat Do?

Addressing the demonstration, student leaders and civic representatives argued that both individuals were targeted because they articulated issues directly affecting ordinary Pune residents:

  • Santosh Pandit's Civic Scrutiny: Through continuous on-ground reporting, Pandit brought public attention to deep road potholes, stalled civic infrastructure, illegal hoardings, and administrative apathy across Kothrud and central Pune. Protesters noted that dispatching armed police teams to breach an activist's residence at 1:00 AM for non-violent speech offenses constitutes disproportionate state power.
  • Vidyanand Bapat's Cultural Stand: Bapat took a principled, outspoken stance against the growing commercialization, political co-option, and laser-DJ disruptions penetrating the sacred Ganesh festival, urging a return to traditional, community-driven values. Instead of dialogue, he was confronted and physically attacked by an unruly mob.

"Neither Pandit nor Bapat acted out of personal ambition; they emerged as the fearless voice of common Pune citizens," declared community leaders during the demonstration. "Because the ruling dispensation cannot counter their legitimate questions with intellectual arguments, they are resorting to police machinery and physical intimidation to silence them."

NSUI, SFI, and Congress Form United Front on Streets

The streets witnessed high-voltage scenes as the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) and the Students' Federation of India (SFI) mobilized hundreds of students alongside civil liberty defenders. Leaders from the Congress party joined the march in solidary, demanding an immediate end to politically influenced police conduct:
