Pimpri-Chinchwad: The continuous and torrential downpour that has been battering the industrial city of Pimpri-Chinchwad and its surrounding areas for the past three days took a fierce turn today. A relentless 72-hour spell of rain has created severe waterlogging across the city. Roads have turned into rivers, and low-lying areas now resemble ponds. Over the last 24 hours, the city recorded a significant 51.5 mm of rainfall, completely disrupting normal public life.
Due to the heavy rains, floodwaters have also entered the famous Shri Moraya Gosavi Temple. However, the most heart-wrenching and alarming situation is unfolding in the Chinchwadgaon area.
Flood Situation in Chinchwadgaon: Citizens Rush to Rescue Voiceless Animals
With the water level of the Pavana River rising rapidly, floodwaters have started entering riverside settlements. Amidst this, panic ensued when water suddenly breached a Gaushala (cow shelter) located near the Pavana River in Chinchwadgaon.
The water level rose so swiftly that the lives of the voiceless animals in the shelter were at severe risk. To prevent the cows and cattle from being washed away, local citizens and volunteers (Gosevaks) immediately rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation. Despite the strong and dangerous water currents, citizens risked their own lives to help. The severity of the situation was such that rescuers literally carried young calves and goats on their shoulders to evacuate them to safety.
"The water level rose very suddenly. If we hadn't reached there on time, many animals would have been washed away. We carried the goats and young calves on our shoulders and moved them to a safe place," shared a local resident.
The torrential rain has literally wreaked havoc in this area.
Major Roads Underwater; Traffic System Collapses
Heavy showers pouring down all day have caused streams of water to flow through the city's main squares and streets. Floodwaters have breached several residential societies in the suburbs and houses in low-lying areas. This has caused massive hurdles for office-goers and commuters. With vehicles breaking down at various spots, the traffic management has completely collapsed, throwing the daily commute into utter chaos.
On the other hand, this continuous downpour has brought a sharp drop in temperatures, bringing a significant chill to the atmosphere.
Administration on 'Alert'; Warning for Citizens to Stay Vigilant
Keeping an eye on the rising water levels of the Pavana River, the Municipal Corporation and the Disaster Management Department have been put on high alert. Residents living along the riverbanks are being instructed to relocate to safer places.
The administration has strongly appealed to citizens not to step out of their homes unless absolutely necessary and to strictly avoid crowding near the riverbanks just to watch the floodwaters.
