PhonePe Assures 'No Fraud' with Card Tokenization on Mobile Devices
Mumbai, India – In a significant development for India's burgeoning digital payments sector, PhonePe Chief Product and Technology Officer (CPTO) and founder, Rahul Chari, has unequivocally dismissed concerns surrounding the security of card tokenization on mobile devices. Speaking at the Global Fintech Festival (GFF) 2026 in Mumbai, Chari asserted that there is "no fraud" enabled specifically through card tokenization, even as he acknowledged that broader applications of tokenization and blockchain technology might warrant certain considerations.
Chari's remarks aim to instill confidence in the rapidly evolving digital payment ecosystem, particularly as card tokenization becomes an increasingly integral part of secure online and mobile transactions. He emphasized that while the concept of tokenization is broad and extends to areas like smart contracts and blockchain, the specific implementation for card payments on mobile devices is robust and secure. "Blockchain technology is a much larger piece...some aspects of it may have some concerns, but specifically with card tokenization, there is no concern," Chari clarified, directly addressing any misconceptions about its vulnerability.
The PhonePe founder was keen to differentiate between the general concept of tokenization and its specific application in card payments, stating, "I don't think that is actually completely a misconception...there is no fraud that gets enabled through card tokenization on mobile devices." This strong affirmation underscores PhonePe's commitment to user security and its confidence in the underlying technology that powers millions of transactions daily.
PhonePe and Visa Unveil Trio of Innovative Payment Solutions
The reassuring message on tokenization security coincided with a landmark announcement from PhonePe and Visa. The two industry giants unveiled three pioneering payment solutions at the Global Fintech Festival 2026: Tap to Pay, Cross Border Scan to Pay, and Smart Accept. This collaboration marks a significant leap forward in making digital payments more accessible, convenient, and secure for a wider demographic across India.
Pioneering Cross Border Scan to Pay
Among the new offerings, the Cross Border Scan to Pay solution stands out, positioning PhonePe as the first application in India to facilitate international transactions through this innovative method. This feature is poised to revolutionize how Indian users conduct payments abroad, offering a seamless and secure alternative to traditional methods. For global travelers and those engaging in international e-commerce, this represents a substantial enhancement in convenience and security.
A Comprehensive Suite of Visa Capabilities
With these launches, PhonePe has also become the first app to offer consumers a comprehensive suite of three key Visa capabilities: Online Device Tokenization, Tap to Pay, and Cross Border Scan to Pay. This integrated approach ensures that users benefit from a unified, secure, and feature-rich payment experience directly within the PhonePe ecosystem.
Empowering Micro-Merchants with Smart Accept
Perhaps one of the most impactful innovations for the domestic market is the Smart Accept solution. This feature is designed to empower India's vast network of micro-merchants, enabling them to accept card payments without the need for traditional Point-of-Sale (POS) devices. Chari explained the mechanics: "Now, that's been there for a while, right, in the ecosystem, but what we're also bringing to the table is now all the small merchants who don't have the POS device for accepting cards, we are now enabling Visa Accept on the phone using the PhonePe for Business app."
The process is remarkably simple and intuitive. Consumers who have saved their Visa cards on the PhonePe app can make credit card payments at small merchants by simply interacting with the merchant's PhonePe for Business app, which is equipped with Visa Accept. "So, now a consumer who saved their Visa card on the PhonePe Consumer app can go to a small merchant who has the PhonePe for Business app with Visa Accept and just phone to phone they can make a credit card payment," Chari elaborated, highlighting the ease of transaction.
The Convenience and Security of Tap to Pay
Addressing the benefits of Tap to Pay, Chari underscored both its convenience and robust security. "I think not carrying a card itself and yet being able to do a transaction is the ease and the convenience," he stated. This feature allows users to make payments by simply tapping their mobile device, eliminating the need to physically carry or swipe a card.
From a security standpoint, Tap to Pay leverages the same proven tokenization technology that has been operating at scale across various international markets for an extended period. "From a security perspective, it rides on the same tokenization technology that's been there for a while and is already operating at scale across various markets in the world, and we're just bringing it more to a larger set of users in India," Chari added. This ensures that while the method of payment is more convenient, the underlying security protocols remain uncompromised, offering users peace of mind.
A New Era for Digital Payments in India
The combined impact of these announcements signifies a new era for digital payments in India. By proactively addressing security concerns around tokenization and simultaneously launching innovative, user-friendly solutions, PhonePe and Visa are not only enhancing the payment experience for millions but also driving greater financial inclusion. The ability for micro-merchants to accept card payments via a smartphone, coupled with the convenience of Tap to Pay and the global reach of Cross Border Scan to Pay, positions PhonePe at the forefront of India's digital transformation, making secure and seamless transactions a reality for an ever-growing user base.
